The Nursery Curriculum

Firm Foundations for a Lifelong Love of Learning

The Nursery curriculum at Edge Grove has been carefully crafted to ignite your child’s curiosity, allowing them to fully explore and develop their ideas. We believe learning should be stimulating,  engaging, and fun, opening a world of wonder where your child can explore his or her interests.

There are seven areas of learning and development that shape the educational programme in our Nursery and each is delivered through planned, purposeful play and a careful blend of adult led and child initiated activities.  Additionally, your child will benefit from lessons in PE, Music / Drama, Forest School and Modern Foreign Languages delivered by subject specialist staff on the main school site.

Seven Areas of Learning

Our Nursery curriculum is based on the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS Areas of Learning and Development) and we personalise our teaching and learning approach to cater to children’s individual needs, encouraging a developing sense of confidence and independence, supporting in areas of challenge, and providing the means for every child to reach or exceed their potential.

The Seven Areas of Learning are listed below:

Communication and Language Listening, speaking, understanding and attention
Physical Development Gross and fine motor skills
Personal, Social and Emotional Development Self regulation, managing self and building relationships
Literacy Comprehension, word reading, writing
Mathematics Number and numerical pattern
Understanding the World Past and present, people and communities, the natural world
Expressive Arts and Design Creating with materials, being imaginative and expressive

OUR PARTNERSHIP WITH YOU

At Edge Grove, we firmly believe that is is not “just” children who join our school but their whole family and we know that a strong child-parent-school partnership is key to success and happiness.

The Nursery operates an “open door” policy for parents at the start and end of each day, as well as the more formal Parents’ Evenings and other events designed to ensure that parents are kept well informed about their child’s progress. We share regular updates, information about current topics and themes, books we are reading, and much more, to support our parents as they navigate their child’s learning journey through Nursery into Reception.

Performing Arts

Your child will have a weekly Performing Arts lesson with specialist teachers (Edge Grove’s Director of Drama or Director of Music), and will develop confidence through a range of music and drama-based activities and performances.

Pupils take part in a Nativity play, a Spring Concert and a Speech Day performance and have many other opportunities to showcase their budding performance skills in front of their friends and teachers.

Physical Education

Nursery pupils have one PE lesson per week taught by specialist PE staff in the School Sports Hall or sometimes on the school sports fields when the weather is fine.

The PE staff focus on the development of fundamental movement skills and hand-eye coordination.

Forest School

Our Nursery pupils are fortunate to enjoy a Forest School session every week with our specialist Forest School leader in the beautiful woodland areas on the main School site.

Forest School sessions provide the children with opportunities to grow in understanding of the natural world, take risks, solve problems and develop team building skills.

“Mud will wash off but memories will last a lifetime!”

Group Enquiry

Nursery staff both plan around the children’s interests and take advantage of spontaneous learning opportunities that present themselves. If your child has a particular interest (such as dinosaurs, space rockets, cooking), teachers will respond accordingly, building links between each area of learning and choosing complementary texts which add richness to the children’s experience.
