Learning in the Senior Department
Learning in the Senior Department follows a senior school model with subject specialist teaching across the curriculum from Year 6.
Pupils benefit from an academic and co-curricular programme that offers breadth and depth, interleaving modern technology with more modern academic approaches and making use of the School’s enviable facilities and resources including the well-resourced main School Library,
From Year 6, our pupils learn all subjects from specialist teachers, the vast majority of whom have experience teaching up to GCSE and A Level.
Having studied both languages from Year 1, from Year 6, pupils opt to study either French or Spanish and will also study Latin.
Our teachers provide a broad range of learning opportunities delivered in a variety of teaching styles, which encourage children to debate, to explore ideas, probe and analyse, and think critically and creatively when solving problems.
We also encourage all our pupils children to be ambitious for themselves and to strive for success in everything that they do. There are numerous opportunities for pupils to extend their learning beyond the curriculum, and Senior Department pupils frequently take part in academic challenges and competitions such as the UK Linguistic Olympiad
And of course, teachers will support children with guidance and practice for both 11+ and 13+ entrance assessments.
Our curriculum
Ignite
At Edge Grove, our most able Senior Department pupils are given opportunities for stretch and challenge via our Ignite Programme. This starts in the Middle Department and extends into Year 6, with notable high ability pupils receiving Ignite Fellowship status in academic, computing or co-curricular (music, drama, art, sport, and design & technology).
