Learning in the Middle Department
Learning in the Middle Department has academic curiosity at its heart. During their time in the Edge Grove Middle Department, our pupils will grapple with big questions that challenge their thinking and help to nurture a ‘can-do’ attitude.
Embracing challenge is central to our ethos; we know HOW children learn is just as important as WHAT they learn.
In Years 3 and 4, Form Teachers are responsible for teaching their classes the majority of academic subjects, with specialist teachers for Games, Modern Foreign Languages (French AND Spanish), PE and Music and Drama, Forest School, Art and Design Technology.
Children are assessed by teachers and grouped according to their ability for Maths, but differentiation takes place in all subjects in different ways.
From Year 5 pupils experience a more “senior school” style school day, with specialist lessons all across the curriculum, taught across our beautiful campus. Pupils therefore experience senior school style teaching, taught by secondary-trained staff, two year before they normally would. Moving around the School, pupils by default start to grow in independence, taking additional responsibility for making sure that they have everything they need for their lessons. Pupils also start to take more responsibility for their own learning, developing strategies to enable them to work with greater independence.
Our teachers use their expertise to create dynamic, engaging learning experiences, unconstrained by the limitations of the National Curriculum, giving every child the opportunity to discover and develop areas of personal interest and find joy in learning about the world around them.
