We’re all thoroughly enjoying our new ‘daily mile’ jogging track, designed to support pupils in a simple, social activity that encourages them to run or jog for one mile at their own pace, in the fresh air with their friends for 15 minutes every day (www.thedailymile.co.uk).
The purpose built track runs around the perimeter of Edge Grove Park within the school’s 48-acre grounds.
The new, maintained track will support pupils in completing their daily mile challenge, which aims to improve the physical, social and emotional wellbeing of children regardless of age, ability or personal circumstances.
Our children are making the most of this excellent new resource. The new track is ideal for classes and year groups to complete their daily mile as well as enjoy the beautiful surrounding grounds of the school. We also use the track for nature trails, cross country training and even lunch time walks for pupils and staff.
In line with our commitment to outdoor learning and activities, we also plan to extend our current adventure trail, using homemade obstacles along the route and also a few steeple chase jumps too.
Research has shown that jogging or running a mile a day can even increase attainment in primary school, and parents have reported an increased interest in health and wellbeing from their children after they have started the daily mile.
Our pupils get a lot out of their daily mile – not only does it help to build resilience and fitness but getting out into the fresh air, rain or shine, also helps to boost concentration levels, mood and wellbeing.
