Religious Studies

Religious Studies at Edge Grove provides a vibrant, stimulating environment in which every child can explore world religions, develop personal faith and consider ethical issues.

Although the school is a Christian establishment the varying stories, festivals and points of view of all major world religions are studied.

Hart House

In Hart House children explore religion through real world events; the festivals and celebrations which they see and take part in throughout the year.  Each form has a dedicated R.S. lesson each week but much of their learning comes from listening to others during Circle Time and Assembly.  You may find the children learning about Diwali, Rosh Hashana, Chinese New Year or Easter depending on the time of year. Hart House pupils visit a local church and St Albans Abbey as well as taking part in Harvest Festivals, Nativity Plays, Carol Concerts and Evensong.

Lower School

In Years 3 and 4 pupils begin to learn more of the Bible stories from both the Old and New Testaments. A variety of teaching methods are used including drama, computer animations and illustrated storyboards. A detailed study on a World Religion is undertaken in Year 4, this is currently Judaism.

Upper School

Pupils in Years 5 and 6 continue their Bible Studies but add to this units on Sikhism, Islam and Hinduism. The highlight of Year 6 is often the individual presentations on an ethical campaigner, which provides an excellent platform for work in Years 7 and 8.

Year 7 marks the beginning of a two year Common Entrance or Scholarship course. The Religious Studies department at Edge Grove has an excellent exam results record and the skills taught here of debate, informed argument and diligent research and referencing for essays are skills which transfer both across the curriculum at Edge Grove and to GCSE and beyond at Senior School. The pupils study core bible stories alongside their contemporary issues such as The Creation alongside Stewardship.   

Religious Studies Department Events

We organise various trips throughout the year such as to a Hindu temple in Year 6 or a Synagogue in Year 8. These trips are arranged to complement the curriculum. Outside speakers are also invited in to the school to augment the pupils’ studies.  We believe a first-hand account by an interesting, knowledgeable speaker is something worth creating time for within the programme of study.
