The Science Department believes in providing a course of study that stimulates curiosity and enjoyment of Science.

All pupils at Edge Grove study a rigorous, varied curriculum covering the development of skills in Scientific Inquiry as well as acquiring a systematic body of knowledge as they progress through the school. It is the policy of the department to continually strive to encourage enjoyment of science as well as helping students to understand the place and importance of science in the world around them.

Pre Prep

Children learn about science through practical and interactive experiences during the course of the school day. Learning is free to develop into areas of student interest and takes into account the existing understanding of students. Investigation, observation and recording skills are developed in order to allow children to better understand their world and express these ideas.

Lower School

In Years 3 and 4 pupils undertake work based in the ISEB syllabus working towards the 11+ examinations. This is undertaken as part of a creative, topic based curriculum.

Middle School and Upper School

As pupils move into Year 5 they begin specialist entirely laboratory-based lessons with opportunities to increasingly develop their skills and awareness of science. Pupils continue to progress towards the 11+ syllabus in Year 6, and then in Years 7 and 8 begin work on the ISEB 13+ entrance examinations. Aid and development is provided to students who are interested in attending schools with their examinations or wishing to challenge themselves to attempt a scholarship to a senior school.
