The English Department believes in nurturing a love of creativity through language and literature. 

All pupils at Edge Grove study a rigorous, varied curriculum covering the development of skills in Reading, Writing, Drama, Speaking and Listening.  It is the policy of the department to continually strive to maintain the importance of pupils’ reading and writing for pleasure.

Pre Prep

We use ‘Letters and Sounds’ to develop children’s phonic knowledge and skills. This is a structured and systematic approach across six planned phases which begins in Nursery and works towards building reading fluency by Year 2. This daily, high intensity phonic work leads to the acquisition of skills at an early age, enabling children to decode familiar words and confidently attempt unfamiliar words. From their very first days in school we aim to foster a love of reading and share stories which enrich the children’s language and experience of storytelling. Our well stocked library also provides a wealth of non-fiction books to stimulate the children’s interests and fascinations. We also choose appropriate texts to support our creative topic based International Primary Curriculum.

Children progress from making meaningful marks to emergent writing and finally to developing neat well-formed letters practised in daily handwriting sessions. By Year 2 most children are able to write in a joined cursive script.

Lower School

Building upon the foundations of Pre Prep, children in enrich their learning in English, linking to the termly topic wherever possible. They use a variety of creative stimuli from film through to poetry in order to engage with and develop their skills in literacy. Children have weekly guided reading sessions with their teacher where they gain understanding of strategies to deepen their comprehension of suitably levelled texts. They take home reading books pitched at their level and visit the Library every week. Weekly sessions incorporate drama, speaking and listening. Children also have a separate Drama lesson each week. Pupils are expected to write in a cursive script and may apply for their pen license in the summer term of Year 3. 

Middle School and Upper School

Years 7 and 8 follow the Common Entrance scheme of work and some pupils are encouraged to prepare for Scholarship – in which the department has had considerable success. Units of work revolve around set texts, and skills build gradually towards an end of unit written outcome. All pupils in the Upper School study a Shakespeare play in the autumn term. Pupils are encouraged to read a range of literature from modern to classic novels; this includes reading a set text and completion of a mini project during school holidays. All pupils have an English lesson in the school library every week, and use a range of apps on the departmental iPads in class time. 

English Department Events

The English Department run a variety of events throughout the school year. In the autumn term we run a poetry competition, as well as a whole school Spelling Bee, a house competition.  In the spring term we take part in the Haileybury Art and Creative Writing competition.  The spring term also sees ‘Book Week’ which includes workshops in the Performing Arts and debating, a travelling book fair and a World Book ‘Dress up’ day for charity.  Summer term events include a readathon and participation in workshops and events alongside local schools. At least twice a year we welcome authors into the School to talk about their novels and the creative writing process which promotes reading and writing for pleasure.
